One that paints a picture of London at the time. This is as interesting as the intrigue that unfolds as you move forward through the book. This was well worth reading for the second time and stands up well against more modern books of the same type.
A trip back in time to 1950/60's London. If you were a fan of the genre at the time you will love the re-reading and reminders of a simpler London and old fashioned policing. Nobody does it better than John Creasey and his Gideon character. Pure nostalgia
The good guys always find the bad guys in this series by one of the UKs most prolific mid-century mystery writers. Easy poolside read in the summer, or with a nice scotch by the fire on a winter evening. Gideon is a senior Scotland Yard official who does just about everything right - and is introspective enough to be an interesting character.
Saw John Ford's film version starring Jack Hawkins recently - so thought I would read the book - a good read, interesting to compare with today's crime novels, excellent use of London as a backdrop
Bought this after seeing the old tv series and thinking the books have to be better. Nup. the author has a remarkable history but I think he might have churned out his books. Of course i have only read one of his and he was ground breaking for his day,I am sure. Never the less I was disappointed. Dated and full of old time prejudices. Shows how far we have come I guess.
I am re-reading this series. Good characters and interesting plots.
I have read John Creasey's books and re-read them. I am so excited that some of them are now available on . I will look forward to the rest of them!
John Creasy has several series, but his best two, in my opinion, are Gideon and Inspector West. They are a bit dated, but, if you like Agatha Christie, you will love these books too.
By-the-way, his other pen name is J. J. Marric.
