Caleb Talbot escaped from prison during a riot. After fleeing the facility, Caleb lived peacefully hidden away on a farm in Nebraska. Until law enforcement discovers the escapee that had been presumed dead, was very much alive.

Warden Hahn of the Kansas State Penitentiary enlisted the aid of Officer Michael Quincy and his canine partner to find the escapee and return him to prison where he belongs.

Caleb Talbot discovered law enforcement was on his tail, and quickly devised a plan to retain his freedom. The kidnapping of a woman is the beginning of Caleb's heartless murder spree.

Michael soon realizes the man he had been hired to capture, has a disturbing past lined with brutality and bloodshed. He also knows Talbot has little regard for human life.

Can Michael and his canine partner Sasha bring the madman to justice? Or will they be just another name on Caleb's ever growing list of heinous murder victims?

Evil Unleashed Mind of a Madman Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Valerie Bowen Todd Waites Books

Mind of a Madman: Evil Unleashed is a thriller. Like most thrillers, the suspension of disbelief must be overcome for the thrilling part of the story to grab the readers by the throat and allow the story to march forward unrestrained. It didn't work for me. The "carefully planned" escape was more coincidental luck and poor police procedures than careful planning. And our main protagonist is declared dead twice in the most incompetent ways possible in the first two days. And he seemed to get, find, or stumble across just what he needed at every turn. Still I read on. The author had an engaging character with a never stated mental problem (for which there was never any true indication that he was getting medical help though it was stated he was), and I was curious.

But the unlikely pursuit of Caleb, the escaped prisoner, across several states by a Kansas cop, sometimes as unglued as Caleb, and later joined by a Nebraska State Trooper, who quits his job to continue the pursuit that stretches over several months (don't remember the weather changing) and across several states, made the story harder and harder to accept. Caleb is one bad dude, and the graphic violence is what you would expect. She nailed some of those scenes. How he wanders around at his size without being spotted defies normal life, but this is fiction and a thriller.

I must confess. I was angry with the ending when I felt like I was coming to a conclusion only to turn the page and be greeted by a notice that the story continues in a second book. There are books that are series, where stories continue, new characters, new events, highs and lows, new adventures, even the reappearance of bad dudes, like Caleb. But they usually end with a conclusion, a message, a meaning, a lesson learned, a story arc completed with the bad guy confronting the last standing good guy to ensure his message: evil triumphs over good. This story just ends. Despite my issue with story construction, the writer writes well enough to garner a 3 for this novel.

Evil Unleashed Mind of a Madman Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Valerie Bowen Todd Waites Books Reviews

Seriously, who edits this s***? Obviously someone who does not know the difference between too & to, there & their etc. Good story ruined by spelling and grammar errors. Too many books w/ errors and inaccuracies
Once again Valerie you give us an excellent new series to read, can't wait to read the second book. Well written.
Madman, evil, violence, descriptions of monstrosities. So many grammatical errors and misspelled words... I plodded through half this book before throwing in the towel.
Ms. Bowen blew me out of the water with her new series (Mind of a Madman) I could not put this book down. She is one of the best authors i have ever had the pleasure to read. I only have one thing to say " keep them coming Ms. Bowen"
Another great book from Ms Bowen. After reading her series "For the Sake of Amelia" I just had to have more, and this series will not disappoint. She definitely kicked it up a notch with this one. It's fast paced with characters you can feel for and like. It held my attention from beginning till end, I literally couldn't put it down.

This book follows Calob Talbot after he escapes from prison and goes on a ruthless killing spree. Officer Michael Quincy and his K9 partner will stop at nothing to capture this madman.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes murder mystery books, you will love it.
I haven't read a book to where I cannot put it down in a very long time. I read the book and a day and half because I was so hooked and couldn't wait to read what the psychopath is going to do next on his journey of "freedom." Yes, like another reader has mentioned I noticed some parts could have been edited better but for me that was minuscule because I was engulfed into the story itself. If you are squeamish when it comes to blood and details of murder then it may not be for you. Although the book is not like that every other sentence but when the psychopath reacts it is in great detail. This is the first time I have ever read a book written by this author and I absolutely will be reading more books that are out there from her. I, myself seemed right there in the setting of the book and that's how I determine (along with the story line of course) that it's a wonderful book and is a great read to past the day away.
Evil Unleashed started out with a scenario that has always been a personal favorite a carefully planned prison break. That's all I needed to keep me reading.

Having read the description of the book and the other reviews, I already knew this guy, Caleb, was a psychotic killer. But knowing that and experiencing the twisted mind behind the killings are two different things. And "experience" it is just what the reader is forced to do.

What makes Caleb so unnervingly creepy (and so ultimately dangerous) is that, more often than not, he can't control his rages. On top of that, there's no telling what might set him off. That unpredictability factor is what kept me turning the pages. Will he or won't he? You're pretty sure he will. You're just not sure when. He's a walking timebomb that can go off at any minute... and does, again and again... and it's not pretty.

You'll really hate this guy. Of course you will. But wait. What's this? Compassion for a heartless killer? Even Caleb has his moments. After all, he's only human, right? As the reader, you'll just have to wrestle with that one on your own. I won't say anymore.

Meanwhile, a couple of cops and a dog are hot on Caleb's trail but Caleb always seems to be just beyond their reach. Where and how will the madness end? Like me, you'll just have to read the next book in the series to find out. I just bought it moments ago.
